Medicines and Cats: What's Safe?
Never give your cat any medication — human or pet — without your veterinarian's direction. Cats break many drugs down poorly, so common medicines that are fine for people (Tylenol, ibuprofen, aspirin, decongestants) can be deadly. This list is for awareness, to help you recognise hazards and act fast — it is not a treatment guide, and it never gives doses. Use the checker for any specific product.

The human medicines that are deadly to cats
Keep these away from cats and treat any exposure as an emergency: acetaminophen (Tylenol) — often fatal, even one tablet; ibuprofen (Advil), naproxen (Aleve) and aspirin; Pepto-Bismol (a salicylate); decongestants (pseudoephedrine / any '-D' product); ADHD stimulants and antidepressants; Vicks VapoRub (camphor); and topical creams like 5-FU and psoriasis (calcipotriene) cream, which can be fatal from a single lick. Many cold/flu combo products hide acetaminophen or pseudoephedrine.
"Vet-prescribed" is not the same as "owner-safe"
Some medicines vets DO prescribe for cats — gabapentin, amoxicillin, fluoxetine, feline NSAIDs, plain Benadryl or cetirizine — are marked Caution here, not Safe, because they're only appropriate under veterinary direction and dosing. Giving a leftover human prescription, guessing a dose, or using a combination ('-D') product can seriously harm your cat. When something seems off, call your vet rather than reaching for the medicine cabinet.
Frequently asked questions
Can I give my cat Tylenol or ibuprofen for pain?
No — never. Acetaminophen (Tylenol) is often fatal to cats, and ibuprofen, naproxen and aspirin cause stomach ulcers and kidney failure. Cats can't safely process these drugs. If your cat is in pain, call your vet for a cat-safe option; if your cat has swallowed any, treat it as an emergency.
Is Neosporin safe for cats?
Use it on a cat only if your vet says so, and never near the eyes — the polymyxin B/neomycin in triple-antibiotic ointments has caused sudden, sometimes fatal allergic reactions when used in cats' eyes. On skin, the bigger issue is the cat licking it off (stomach upset). It's a Caution, not a go-to.
Can I give my cat Benadryl?
Vets sometimes use plain diphenhydramine in cats, but only at a vet-directed dose — and never the 'Benadryl-D' form, which contains pseudoephedrine (toxic to cats). Call your vet before giving any antihistamine.
My cat swallowed a pill or licked a medicated cream — what do I do?
Don't wait for symptoms and don't try to make your cat vomit at home. Call your veterinarian or a 24/7 line right away: Pet Poison Helpline (855-764-7661) or ASPCA Animal Poison Control (888-426-4435). Bring the packaging so they know exactly what (and how much) was involved.
